Joseph Colineau is a Senior Expert in the Physics Research Group, at Thales Research and Technology, Palaiseau, and a specialist in sensors and image processing. Technical manager of the project, he developped this software, jointly with Hélène Soubaras, also from TRT, in the scope of a Thales Mission Insertion initiative.

Designed to facilitate distant readout to visual impaired people, PortaNum is a software application usable in professional conditions (participation to meetings, conferences, workshops) or in educational cursus (from primary to higher education)

PortaNum delivers on the laptop screen of the user the images captured by a good quality camera (DV camcorder, network camera), otherwise a webcam.

The user may then :

At home, a normal webcam allows to turn your PC into a video-magnifier.

In public installations, one or several network cameras deliver a Wi-Fi stream of images to the users PC’s. Classrooms as well as university amphis have so been equipped.

Developed inside Thales Research and Technology, and based on the Thales know-how of the digital image processing techniques, this software is a unique technical aid. The feedbacks from pilot sites users have contributed to enhance the ergonomy and performances of this application.
